“I’m currently living in Japan, and I’ve been in Okayama City for around five months now. Every morning, I wake up to my breakfast of Melon Bread and a Yogurt Pot! I usually watch some US TV before grabbing my Cintiq and getting on with a days painting.”
AA: When did you first start to draw?
Rei: I always used to doodle on paper, maths books, etc. But I only took up drawing officially eight or so months ago when I purchased my Cintiq. There are a few mouse drawings on my Deviantart that were from before then, but my tablet really allowed me to advance quickly. In eight months I’ve gone from flat drawings to fully rendered images. I primarily focus on World of Warcraft art, because the game is something I’ve loved for several years now.
AA: How do you prefer to draw?
Rei: Definitely digitally. Two years ago I failed my art degree whilst realising paintbrushes and me really didn’t get along. Nor did pastels. Or pencils. Anything for that matter! I really like digital because of the rather convenient ‘undo’ button.
AA: What piece of art by yourself is your all-time favourite?
Rei: At the moment, my favourite piece is definitely ‘Taeonthrial.’This painting took around 7 hours, with a couple of final edits afterwards. I used a reference for the posing as I intended this to be practice for skin tones and shading.
AA: What do you enjoy drawing?
Rei: First and foremost: Females. Before being an artist, I was a photographer and I specialised in photo-manipulation. Something I admired was the contours, shading and curves that females have, and I believe that’s reflected in my artistic ability. I am far happier drawing beautiful female Humans, Elves, Draenei. Despite this! I do REALLY aspire to learn how to draw and shade male characters. There are a few examples on my Deviantart and Facebook page of past attempts, but I really feel I still have a lot to learn.
Out of all the Warcraft races, I prefer drawing Kaldorei. I really like playing with the purple skin tones and odd coloured hair!
AA: Do you have any webpages/deviantart pages?
Plus, I plan to have a portfolio page in the future! 😀
AA: Who is your favourite artist?
For a more semi-realism approach, there are lots and lots of artists I look up to – Many of which are on Argent Arts! But to pick just two I’d probably say PuddingPack and Charlie Bowater. PuddingPack has a very beautiful style with vibrant colours, and Charlie Bowater has an incredible imagination for her artwork!
AA: What inspires your art?
Rei: The game, Warcraft, through and through. Nothing else. Warcraft has such a beautiful universe of artwork surrounding it. I make it my job to buy each and every artbook released by Blizzard just to endlessly stare at the pages. The landscapes, character designs, everything is just so unique and wonderful!
AA: What’s your best tip to beginner artists?
Rei: Don’t give up, and a painting is never truly finished! I often find myself scrapping paintings after hours and hours of work- and these are usually commissions that do need to be done! Just keep at it. Try and try again! Secondly, as I’m still learning, I’d also like to point out that a painting is never truly finished. You’d be surprised how many re-uploads I do to my Deviantart. Taeonthrial mentioned above has already had about six re-uploads with minor edits. There’s always something to improve on, and don’t feel bad about that!
AA: What pad do you use?
Rei: Wacom Cintiq 13HD
AA: What program do you use?
Rei: Photoshop CS6
